More about Makhana, India’s favourite super snack
SUPERFOOD
Makhana is a high-value aquatic cash crop that grows in the perennially wet Mithila and Kosi regions of Bihar, in the North of India. It is fast becoming a hot trend as a popular traditional Indian vegetarian snack. Makhana has been widely used in traditional Eastern medicine to treat various diseases including kidney problems, chronic diarrhoea, excessive leucorrhoea, and hypofunction of the spleen. It is fast emerging as a global superfood on account of its rich medicinal properties and mineral content.
CASH CROP
In India, the state of Bihar is decidedly the largest producer of Makhana, which is derived from lotus seeds. During its lifetime, the lotus plant develops seed pods, and each pod contains approximately 20 seeds that mature within 40 days. The seeds are then dried and roasted on high heat. Once fully roasted, the now-blackened outer shell breaks off and the white ball-shaped puffs pop out. These seeds are now called Makhanas. Although the majority of this crop is grown in India, Makhana is also grown in Japan, Korea and Russia.
HEALTHY
Yes, you can. Makhana helps improve your digestion and keeps constipation at bay due to its high fibre content. They make great anti-ageing foods because they have an abundance of antioxidants. A handful of makhanas every day will also give you youthful skin. But here’s a word of caution—you must remember to not consume it as a fried snack.
